Meaning of Urbanization

In light of the recent detention of HINDRAF’s leaders under the draconian Internal Security Act, I hereby take the liberty of publishing a poem that was first published in a student journal abroad in the summer of 1980, that was also republished in the New Haven’s Suara Mimbar in 1993.

It is followed by my own loose unqualified English version. Perhaps visitor Cik Siti Hajar can help with more accurate and insightful translation. And apologies to The Prof.

No need for interpretation.

Apa Erti Pembandaran

Pembandaran
ialah
satu
kesesakan
lebuhraya
panjangnya
dua batu
di mana di depannya
sebuah trak
melindungi
sebuah
kereta
dengan seorang perempuan
yang sakit tenat
mengandung
menunggu
ambulan
yang
meluru
dengan bising
untuk dibawa
ke hospital
yang penuh
dengan orang sakit
dari
kampung kemiskinan
daerah kemelesetan
negara kaya yang
sentiasa
dikunjungi
pelancung antarabangsa ke
pantai dara
rimba sunyi
muzium hamba
masjid syaitan
zoo kemanusiaan
yang dilaung-laung
oleh tokoh-tokoh
partai
demokrasi
sendirian
berhad
yang memerintah
dengan
Iblis Syaitan Act.

The Meaning of Urbanization

Urbanization
is
a
congested
highway
of
two miles
lead by
a truck
blocking
a
car
with a woman inside
who is very ill
and pregnant
waiting for
an ambulance
that is
rushing
noisily
to be brought to
the hospital
that is filled
with the sick
from
poverty-stricken villages
destitute counties
of a rich nation
that is always
visited by
international tourists to
virgin beaches
serene jungles
slave muziums
satanic mosques
humanitarian zoos
that are being proclaimed
by personalities of
private
limited
democratic
party
that rules
with the
Satanic Evil Act.
