SRAI BBB al-Mawaddah: Premier Edition

al-Mawaddah @ FlickrMuhammad brought home his school’s first ever magazine, yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised at the effort.

After a little more than a year as parents at the school, both my wife and I have been pretty much in the dark about the school’s activities. We always wonder what else does the school do. The school has limited numbers of small bulletin boards that don’t tell much.

Now this magazine will tell all you need to know about the school. Well, almost. I wonder if there is a PDF version of this magazine.

Besides the achievement of soccer, I wonder what other associations or sports activities that are available at the school. Here are some I found out from the al-Mawaddah:

Persatuan Bahasa Melayu, Persatuan Sains & Matematik, Persatuan Agama Islam, Persatuan Bahasa Inggeris, Persatuan Bahasa Arab, Persatuan Seni Rekacipta, Persatuan Muzik & Kebudayaan, Persatuan Keceriaan & Rekreasi, Kelab Seni & Kraftangan, and Kelab Rawi & Marhaban;

Bolasepak, Badminton, Sepak Takraw, Bola Jaring, Bola Baling, Bola Tampar, Karom & Congkak, Catur & Dam, Sukan Olahraga, Sukan Olahraga Elit, and Bola Baling Elit;

Persatuan Pengakap, Persatuan Puteri Islam (there are two group different photos for Persatuan Puteri Islam), and Persatuan Tunas Puteri.

There you go. Muhammad is pretty good at carrom. He and Mujahid already joined the Tae Kwon Do. So if you wanna help planning for your children’s activity in school, you now know your choices.

By the way, Tae Kwon Do is not part of the school’s activity. It is a private initiative for the school. Sort of like those Private Funding Initiatives for all those Corridors launched all over the country lately.

The website of the school is boldly printed on the front cover: Yes, I am scratching my head. Not even a sign that says “Under Construction.” As of this posting, MYNIC shows that: Domain Name does not exist in database. And why The school is not a commercial entity. Why not go for the Wallahu a’lam.

There are schools that opted for the free platforms, such as Blogger. SERI ABIM and Sekolah Kebangsaan Seksyen 7 Bandar Baru Bangi are a few examples.

Designs and names are merely cosmetics. In this age, the public, especially parents, are craving for information. Credible information. Up-to-date information. Interactive information. Never mind the beauty of the site, or the glamor of the name. The public and the parents just want to know what’s going on without having to barge into the school’s office all the time. One e-mail address is just not good enough in this day and age.

Purchasing the site name, getting it hosted, and designing the pages is one thing. Maintaining a relevant website is another story. You can’t expect an outsider to get up-to-date information on the school to be posted on the website on a regular, if not daily, basis. It is not practical. This can only be done by someone from the inside. The school needs an IT savvy staff.

By pushing out this magazine, the school has already shown that it has publishing savvy personnel. So let’s just upgrade a little bit to cyber space. A lot of the parents already are.

But the magazine was a good work. You can take it from me, I know what publishing is all about.
