I follow the Torch Run rather loosely. I find it to be a combination of public relation and commercialism.
TV3’s Bulletin Utama described the recent Run in Kuala Lumpur as one with the tightest security for a sporting event in Malaysia.
Perhaps those at TV3 haven’t lived long enough. If they did their homework, they would have found out that from the mid until late 70s, any soccer or field hockey match between Setapak High School and St. John’s Institution would almost always require the presence of the police and the Federal Reserve Unit.
Those matches almost always ended with the players having to walk away protected by the FRU’s Guard of Honor.
What those Olympic Torch bearers went through was nothing compared to what Setapak High and St. John’s athletes had to go through in those days.
